Captured at the infancy of the restoration process, this 1970 Escort MkI is destined to compete in the FIA Historic Rally Championship. It was sent in a sorry state to SD Developments by a French motorsport company, who are building the car for a customer in Belgium. In SDD’s Todmorden garage it has been sandblasted back to the bare metal, had many panels repaired and seen endless hours of welding to the basic bodyshell. The shell was then prepared for rallying by fitting a rollcage and traditional Escort bubble arches - each wheel arch can take an entire day to fit. With the shell structurally sound, and meeting the stringent FIA regulations, it was recently shipped to a bodyshop in France for painting. From there, it will go to a car builders who will add the mechanics and conduct testing with the owner in Belgium. Quite a journey.
